Welcome to
the table.
Learn, play, and connect through American Mah Jongg.
Whether you’re learning the basics, growing your confidence, or already comfortable at the table, The Lucky Dot has something for you. From beginner classes to private lessons, social play and curated retreats, we create welcoming spaces to gather around the table.
Hi, I’m Courtney.
The seeds of The Lucky Dot were planted over 20 years ago around my grandparents kitchen table. For me, Mah Jongg has always been more than just a game — it’s a reason to gather and a way to connect. This pursuit is inspired by this tradition and rooted in love.
“How do I get started?”
New players often ask, “How do I learn?” Below I’ve outlined the ideal learning path to confidence at the Mah Jongg table. Everyone’s journey looks a little different. The one thing that’s most important is practice. The more you play, the easier it is to find your confidence.
-
The first step in learning to play is Mah Jongg 101. You’ll learn the basics of American Mah Jongg including tile recognition, how to read the NMJL card, the rules, and the flow of game play.
Begin with a Mah Jongg 101 class, a private group lesson or a learning retreat.
-
Next you’ll want to attend guided play to practice and continue learning. Guided play moves at a slower pace with your instructor present to answer questions, help with decision-making, and support the table when needed. Many players benefit from attending multiple guided play sessions as they get more comfortable.
Sign up for an upcoming session or book a private guided play for your group.

A private lesson gives us focused time to work on the areas you want to strengthen, such as choosing a hand, understanding the card, strategy, the Charleston, or building confidence at the table.
