Learn To Play

How do I get started?

Outlined below is the ideal path to learn Mah Jongg. Everyone’s journey looks a little different. The one thing that’s most important — consistency. The more you play, the easier it is to find your confidence.

Upcoming opportunities to learn and practice will be listed below. If no classes are currently scheduled—or the available dates don’t work for you—use the buttons below to fill out an interest form!

Learn American Mah Jongg with confidence.

  • Mah Jongg 101

Start with Mah Jongg 101. Learn the basics of American Mah Jongg including tile recognition, how to read the NMJL card, the rules, and the flow of game play.

  • Beginner Guided Play

This is the perfect next step after learning the basics. Guided play moves at a slower pace with an instructor present to answer questions, help with decision-making, and support the table when needed. Many players benefit from attending multiple guided play sessions as they get more comfortable. Once you’re feeling confident, you can sign up for social play and attend other Mah Jongg events or simply sit down at the table with your friends and play.

  • Private 1:1 Lesson

This step is optional, but incredibly valuable. A private lesson gives us focused time to work on the areas you want to strengthen, such as choosing a hand, understanding the card, strategy, the Charleston, or building confidence at the table.

  • Graduate to Social Play

Once you feel ready, you can join social play! This is where you can enjoy the game, meet other players, and continue growing your skills in a fun, welcoming setting.

  • Join the GroupMe Community

Join the FREE GroupMe community to connect beyond the table — RSVP to FREE events, stay in the loop on classes and events, ask Mah Jongg questions, connect with other local players, and find opportunities to play! In this group, you’ll get PRIORITY access to paid events and occasionally get deals just for being a member!
